Aircraft Registry (FAA)

Look up a US-registered aircraft: its make and model, year, serial number and Mode S hex code (the address its transponder broadcasts, which is how flight trackers identify it), and, when it is owned by an organization, the registered owner and address. Search by tail number, hex code, make or model, organization name, or an organization's address, to find every aircraft one company, partnership or government body has registered. Aircraft owned by individuals are listed without the person's name or address; only the state is shown.

How to use this page (tips and what you will not find)
  • Tail number: type it with or without the N (N305PV or 305PV).
  • Hex code: the 6-character code a flight tracker shows for an aircraft, such as A0B1C2. It stays the same when the flight number or callsign changes, so it ties a tracked plane to its registration.
  • Everything one company owns: type part of its name in “Organization owner” (words can be in any order), or click Other aircraft of this owner on any result.
  • Companies that share an address: click Same address on a result. Several differently named companies at one street address can be a lead, but it is not proof of anything by itself: registered agents and law firms put many companies at one address.
  • Narrow a search by filling in more than one box, for example a make such as “Gulfstream” plus a state, or tick “Organization-owned only”.
  • Individually owned aircraft show the make, model, serial number and hex code, but no name or address, and cannot be found by owner name. Owners who asked the FAA to keep their aircraft out of public tracking are not in the FAA's public file at all.
  • Who owned it at the time? The owner shown is the registered owner on the build date above. For a past event, compare with the NTSB case (open NTSB cases on the result).
  • Next steps from a result: NTSB cases for that tail number, the FAA's own record, and a live map by hex code.

This search is not switched on yet. In the meantime, the FAA's own aircraft inquiry looks up one tail number at a time.

The registry shows who an aircraft is registered to on the build date. Ownership can change between an event and today, and the FAA's own record is the official one. Owners who asked the FAA to keep their aircraft out of public tracking (the LADD and PIA programs) are already left out by the FAA.

Credit: registry data from the FAA Releasable Aircraft Registry. Names and addresses of individual owners are not stored or shown. Owner information reflects the registry on the build date, not necessarily when an event happened.
