NTSB Investigations
Transportation accident investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board: aviation, highway, railroad, marine, pipeline and hazmat, from 1962 on.
Browse by date, look up every case for an aircraft's tail number, or open a case by its NTSB number (such as ERA26FA326, from a news story or report).
Recent cases are preliminary and can change; investigations take a year or more to finish.
Names and addresses of owners or operators who are unincorporated individuals are not shown. Companies, agencies and other organizations are shown in full.
How to use this page (tips and what to expect)
- Just open it: with no choices you see the last 14 days of cases in every mode, newest first. Click any case number to open the full record.
- Case numbers are a letters-and-numbers code such as ERA26FA326: letters for the NTSB office, the year, a code for the kind of case, and a sequence number. After the year, FA usually means a fatal accident, LA a less serious accident, IA an incident, and WA an event abroad that the NTSB took part in.
- A particular aircraft: type its tail number to see every NTSB case it was involved in, going back to 1962.
- Going back in time: change the From and To dates. One search covers up to 92 days, so for a year, search it in pieces. The State and word filters work only on the dates you chose.
- On a case page: the facts, aircraft or vehicles, the owner and operator when they are organizations, weather, the NTSB's narrative, and a table with every field the NTSB published. Use the citation buttons to copy a reference.
- New cases are preliminary. The probable cause is blank until the NTSB finishes, often a year or more later, and any detail can change. Check the NTSB's own page for the latest.
- What is not shown: names and addresses of owners and operators who are individuals, and the builder's name on a homebuilt aircraft when it is a person (also where the narrative repeats it, and photo credits that name a private person). Companies and other organizations are shown in full. The narrative is otherwise the NTSB's own text, which only rarely names anyone.
- Old cases (before about 1982) have much less detail than recent ones.
- Cross-checks: from an aviation case you can open the FAA registry record for the tail number, and from any case with a location you can look at satellite images of the spot.
