The prime rate, Federal Reserve rates, Treasury yields, current mortgage rates, housing market figures, loan delinquency rates and the national unemployment rate by sex and race. National totals and rates only, nothing about individuals. The line beside each figure shows its recent history (about a year of daily readings, otherwise the last 60 readings); the dates under it show the span, and hovering shows the date and value of each point. Figures are refreshed from FRED every 6 hours; each source publishes on its own schedule (daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly), so the "as of" date can be earlier than today.

| Mortgage debt service payments, % of income Quarterly What this meansThe share of after-tax household income that goes to required mortgage payments (principal and interest) across all U.S. homeowners with a mortgage. For families: it is usually the largest single fixed bill, so when it rises, less is left for everything else. Fixed-rate mortgages keep this steady for existing owners even when rates jump, which is why new buyers feel higher rates far more than current owners do. Property taxes and insurance are not included. |

FRED |
| Consumer debt service payments, % of income Quarterly What this meansThe share of after-tax household income that goes to required payments on credit cards, car loans, student loans and other personal loans. For families: this debt tends to carry higher interest than a mortgage, and credit card rates move with the prime rate, so this share is more sensitive to Federal Reserve rate changes. |

FRED |
| Household debt service payments, % of income Quarterly What this meansThis is the share of household income, after taxes, that goes to required payments on mortgages and consumer debt (credit cards, car loans, student loans and other personal loans) each quarter. It is an average across all U.S. households, so it measures the overall load, not any one family. What it means for families: every dollar of that share is spoken for before groceries, rent, child care or savings. When the share rises, families have less room to absorb a job loss, a medical bill or a car repair, and are more likely to fall behind on payments or lean on credit cards. When it falls, they have more breathing room. Why it moves: it rises when interest rates go up (variable-rate cards and new loans cost more) or when people borrow more, and falls when incomes grow faster than debt payments. Households with lower incomes or more debt than average carry a heavier burden than this national figure shows. It excludes rent, utilities, insurance and property taxes, so it understates the full squeeze on renters and homeowners. |
